LAURA

After Daniel closed the door behind him and we scurried away until we were out of earshot, I whispered, “Oh my gosh, what is wrong with that man?”

Laughing, but not because he took it lightly, instead with bewilderment, he said, “I have no idea. Um…I’m sorry you had to put up with him. I knew he had eyes for you, but fuck, did he think you were his girlfriend?”

“I don’t know, but he’s freaky.” I made sure to smile while saying it so I didn’t appear so worried that I looked like I was backing out of the job.

Unfortunately, he missed it, and asked, “Are you sure you’re…okay with all this? And, I mean, you know what they’re, or, we are involved with now…”

For some reason, I was touched that he considered my feelings, even though that should be expected of anyone requesting you get involved with illegal weapons. Truth was, I was terrified. This entire world was so foreign to me.

Insanely beautiful and rich ex-girlfriends walking through the door, an old man who could be my grandfather getting too handsy for my liking, and now I knew my super sexy boss was renting buildings that would store guns. But, even without my mom being my main motivation, I felt such a thrill from being in such unfamiliar scenery. Besides, Daniel’s sexiness was becoming harder and harder to ignore. Even if I wanted to, I wasn’t sure my mind would let me leave quite yet…

“Yeah, don’t worry,” I responded breezily, even though my heart was still pounding from leaving the lounge. “I’m in this until the end.”

“Good,” he said as he walked by the portrait of his ex’s father without glancing this time. “And believe me, I’m never letting him be alone with you, by the way. Fuck that.”

My heart fluttered at his protective, irritated tone. All night, I’d thought he was getting a little defensive over me, but I didn’t want to get too cocky. Along with his comment regarding me being a good worker, wow, he sounded so sincere…

He cut off my thoughts to continue rambling, making me laugh over the fact that he appeared more rattled than I was. “I don’t understand how someone like him could think he’d ever have a chance with someone like you. Insane, the arrogance of some people.”

“Oh, like you’re one to talk.” I gave him a little nudge.

“Yeah, I am one to talk,” he said, confidently as we neared the living room.

“You were almost as bad during my job interview.”

“Come on, I had way better moves,” he said.“In the fifties, maybe he’d have a chance. But come on, he’s way outdated, who calls a woman-”

Our fun, flirty banter was interrupted by a certain platinum-blonde, fair-skinned, emerald-eyed ex-girlfriend of Daniel’s. On reflex, I glanced up at his face after recognizing her as Camilla, the woman who made him so grumpy. As usual, he had the same bitter scowl on his face. Although it felt good to see that he despised her, the tension between the two bothered me more than if they were perfectly amicable.
